Freedom Song
|
Performed by African Heritage Association
Freedom Song is a stage play written and directed by Curtis Williams and performed by Geraldine West Hudley. Futuria is a visionary and a composite of enslaved Black women who seek freedom. So fervently committed to the effort, she secretly teaches herself to read. While bearing the burdens of slavery, she encourages her fellow slaves to have faith and listen for the freedom song signaling the arrival of “our own Moses” to lead them out of bondage. In the end, she wants her people to own the very plantations on which they are enslaved. Her visions ring true, as she sings and talks her way through her ordeals. Her focus is on the plantation that becomes Resora.
